Wade Crowfoot Says The Time is Now: Healthy Rivers and Landscapes

Wednesday, Jul 15th, 2026

California’s rivers support our communities, farms, fish and wildlife. As pressures on native fish populations continue, finding solutions that improve river health while supporting California’s people and economy has never been more important.

California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot shares why he believes the Healthy Rivers and Landscapes program offers a meaningful path forward.

Healthy Rivers and Landscapes integrates functional river flows with on-the-ground habitat restoration to improve conditions for fish and wildlife throughout the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers and the Bay-Delta watershed. As Secretary Crowfoot explains, the approach is guided by scientific monitoring and collaborative decision-making, with plans to restore more than 45,000 acres of habitat, including floodplains and spawning and rearing habitat that are essential for native fish.

He also highlights another important benefit: many habitat projects are already underway, while others are ready to move forward in the near term, creating jobs, supporting local economies and delivering lasting benefits for California’s communities while improving habitat for fish and wildlife.

Watch the video to hear Secretary Crowfoot’s perspective on how Healthy Rivers and Landscapes can help advance durable, science-informed solutions for California’s rivers, fish and communities.

As Secretary Crowfoot says: “We need real solutions now. The Healthy Rivers and Landscapes program meets this moment.”
