2021 Salmon Snapshot: Seeing the Whole Picture

Wednesday, Feb 23rd, 2022

A new infographic shows what Sacramento Valley winter-run Chinook salmon experienced in 2021, including the attrition factors they endured during each life cycle stage. The salmon were exposed to some of the hottest and driest conditions on record. Despite this, the species saw the largest return of adults in 15 years and their offspring were able to successfully migrate downstream and out into the ocean, where they will reside for the next three years. This picture is a vivid reminder why we need to address every life stage for salmon, which calls upon the importance of the Sacramento Valley Salmon Recovery Program and the numerous efforts underway to improve conditions for salmon. This also highlights the importance of ridgetop to river mouth water management in the Sacramento River Basin, where water resources managers are working with landowners and conservation partners to reactivate the landscape to support our vital rivers and every part of the freshwater life-cycle.

See the infographic below for more information on each life-cycle stage.
