As part of NCWA’s annual meeting this year, we will be hosting a conversation this Friday morning with several leading scientists and managers to explore the Sacramento Valley landscape and how we can continue to cultivate a shared vision in the Sacramento Valley for a vibrant way of life.

As a passionate and life-long student of the Sacramento Valley and an active collaborator in efforts to improve fish and wildlife and water management in the region, I have been inspired by many of the leading scientists who have been teaching us about the importance of activating our landscape in the Sacramento Valley to support our vital rivers. This includes the work by former Resources Secretary Huey Johnson, former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dale Hall, recently retired Department of Water Resources lead scientist Ted Sommer, and many others. I was also drawn to the seminal book from the UC Press: Floodplains: Processes and Management for Ecosystem Services.

Like many others, I was skeptical when I first heard about and read some of this work. Yet, as I read and listened further, I started to better understand the importance of landscape in supporting our vital river systems. Various field visits provided the context for visualization and robust discourse, which led to an even better understanding and wanting to learn more. Watching success stories, such as waterfowl along the Pacific Flyway and spring-run salmon on Butte Creek, led to further curiosity and wanting to learn from these efforts and replicate them where possible.

This work has inspired me and it has sparked a new generation of leaders in the Sacramento Valley to learn more about the region and opportunities to improve fish and wildlife by reactivating our landscape through innovative, ridgetop to river mouth, multi-benefit water management. On Friday, I have the opportunity to converse with the next generation of scientists and managers who are reimagining our landscape for the benefit of the region and to guide the future of water management. The details for this conversation are shown below. We hope you can join this conversation.
