The Floodplain Forward leaders are advancing a Portfolio for Fish and Wildlife, which together will help reactivate our floodplains for the benefit of fish, wildlife, and people. This landscape-scale portfolio of integrated restoration projects is designed to restore ecological function to the Sacramento River Basin – in harmony with communities and farms – through the following restoration priorities:
Investing in these priorities will implement the federal and state Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration on landscape-scale, multi-beneficial floodplain water projects in the Sacramento River Basin and catalyze the delivery of our portfolio of win-win projects aimed directly at advancing the best science for longterm, sustainable solutions to protect and benefit people, fish, birds and wildlife.
There are unique opportunities in the Sacramento River Basin to reactivate floodplains and mimic historical natural processes to enhance flood protection, improve conditions for threatened salmon, sustain the vulnerable Pacific Flyway, replenish sustainable groundwater resources, and increase California’s resilience in the face of weather whiplash. These multi-benefit solutions work together in harmony and are highlighted in the work of leading researchers from the University of California, Davis, and proven in the field through collaborative partnerships between landowners, scientists, nongovernmental organizations, conservation groups, and water managers.
The Floodplain Forward Coalition is a partnership of more than 30 organizations, including farmers, conservation groups, water suppliers, and government agencies, working together to advance landscape-scale solutions for a more resilient Sacramento River Basin. For more information, see here.
