The Sacramento River is a tremendous resource for a large portion on Northern California, but I would like to reduce this overall perspective down to a very personal point of view. When I was young, not even a teenager, my Dad would take me fishing on the river right in the middle of town! I didn’t think much of it at the time, fishing was fishing. But as I look back, it was a big deal and still is. There is world class fishing in the center of Redding and people travel from far off places just to enjoy this spectacular river. This is just one short stretch along the river that meanders nearly from Mt. Shasta to the Golden Gate Bridge and provides the vitality for a whole region of California.
These recreational opportunities along the Sacramento River are special and they also provide a much needed boost to the local economy. The water resources in the Sacramento watershed are used for many purposes such as drinking, farming, recreation, fish habitat, bird sanctuaries, and many more. All of these uses are extremely important to our region; therefore we must protect and nurture our water supply for the benefit of all. Besides, I want to go fishing again.
